Last night when sleeping my left big toe starting hurting

Customer Question

Last night when sleeping my left big toe starting hurting me. It was a throbbing pain that lasted for few seconds but would recur in minutes. This symptom has continued today. I am a 67 year old male with treated high blood pressure and diabetes. do you think it is Gout and if so, what can I do about it?

Thank you for your question.

Typically gout would cause not only pain but also swelling of the toe and a redness of the overlying skin as well.

But gout is still a possibility.

I would recommend that you be seen by your doctor to have this evaluated further.

You will initially require anti-inflammatory medications like indomethacin or other anti-inflammatory agents for the pain.

Over-the-counter pain medications like motrin or aleve may also help

Uric acid levels in an acute episode of gout may be normal but can be raised.
