Hello Its sunday morning here in Australia. My mum is 87 with a lower leg ulcer that has been treated for some time . Now celulitis overnight - very red and swollen , fluid etc Home docs not availble today, I am wondering of starting her on cephalexin
antibiotic or ammoxicillan - otherwise it will be a very long wait at the hospital. advice accepted. I have been washing gently in warm salt water , drying . I put small antibiotic powder on. Nurses dress every 3 days but its not enough . Thankyou

If it is cellulitis associated with purulent drainage or exudate, in the absence of a drainable abscess, you should use clindamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or tetracycline (doxycycline or minocycline). If it is cellulitis with no purulent drainage or exudate and no associated abscess, you should use clindamycin, amoxicillin combined with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or amoxicillin combined with tetracycline (doxycycline or minocycline).
