Customer Question

I have sharp pain in my lower right side and back area. From reading, I would say it is the right flank area. The pain is hardly noticeable throughout the day but is very uncomfortable in a laying down position. I would describe it as sharp and burning. Makes it difficult to sleep as I cannot get comfortable. I have no other symtoms. Pain seemed to start in middle of lower back a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was muscular. Am currently on vacation and wondering if I should see a doctor before my flight home about a week from now. Would appreciate your feedback. I don't think it requires any kind of emergency care seeing as there are no other symptoms but would fell better if I had some medical advice.

Hi Anita,

This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

I understand your concerns.

Since the pain is worse on lying down and tends to be localized on the right flank, this is likely nerve compression related pain.

Burning and sharp character suggest nerve related pain.

Lower spine arthritis or paraspinal muscle spasm can cause pressure on the nerves.

Another possibility can be kidney stone related pain.

But pain is usually more severe and worsens with movement.

Besides urinary symptoms also will be present.

Intestinal or appendicitis related pain will cause other symptoms.

Hence, unlikely.

Now, nerve and muscle related pain can be controlled with an anti inflammatory medication like Naproxen 500 mg twice daily.

Also warm compress and icing alternately will help.

Lower back exercises also may prove beneficial.

You can go to the local hospital if pain is unbearable.

Best wishes,

It was my pleasure to help you today.
