Elderly mother has extreme top of foot pain and she says it

Customer Question

Elderly mother has extreme top of foot pain and she says it feels like a burning sensation sometimes. Dr has prescribed orthotics. Aren't those for bottom of foot pain like plantar facsiaits? (spelling sorry?) . they did not say it's arthritis and she's had no injury. it's been a year with this pain. before we spend a lot on them, will these really help? thanks

Hi and thanks for the query.
There are a few causes that need to be ruled out here. Top of the foot or dorsal foot pain can be caused by metatarsalgia, nerve compression or tendonitis. These are the most common causes. Since, there is burning, nerve compression is the most likely. I would suggest that you discuss this possibility with her doctor and have nerve conduction studies done. An x ray of the foot will help rule out bone spurs, which are uncommon but need to be ruled out none the less. Tendonitis can be diagnosed clinically and if it is present, then splinting, orthotics and steroid injections can be beneficial in alleviating the pain.

Hope this helps.
