Customer Question

Hi - for the past three weeks when I wake my legs have been aching and feeling weaker than normal - during this time my sleep has also been disrupted - I find that I am waking several times per night for a few seconds then going back to sleep. I experienced 3-4 days where my symptoms went away but they seem to have returned. I am a28 year old male and have recently been through quite a stressful period.

Hi there,

You are having sleep disturbances and leg weakness and pain on waking up.

It is likely you are experiencing restless legs during sleep which wakes you up.

And legs feel tired in the morning as the consequence.

Stress is a most common cause.

However, iron deficiency is another very common cause.

Dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities also can cause this.

Other less likely causes include diabetes, thyroid disorder, peripheral neuropathy.

Probably this is just stress and anxiety related and will improve over time.

Meanwhile you can try Magnesium 400 mg daily, Iron 65 mg daily, vitamin D 1000 Iu daily.

For stress and anxiety valerian extract 400 mg daily at bedtime may be tried.

hat will help with peaceful sleep as well.

Please discuss with your doctor also.

Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.

Thank you - my energy levels haven't really dropped. I am still pretty much the same - just with tired legs and it seems to wear off during th day. Would there not be other signs if it were anaemia? Especially as it started pretty suddenly
Expert:  Dr Basu replied 1 year ago.

You do not have anemia.

But iron deficiency still possible without any anemia.

Iron storage can be depleted and may not affect the blood cell production unless it is severe iron deficiency.

Nowadays we check ferritin level to assess for iron deficiency only.

Ferritin level below 45 in active young individual is taken as deficient.

This is one of the possible causes as I explained above.

Anxiety is more likely.

Best wishes
