My mother is eighty five and has recently had a blood test

Customer Question

Hello Doctor
My mother is eighty five and has recently had a blood test with the following results:
Haemoglobin 123, WBC 22,3. Lymphocyte 18.4, Platelets 157.
She has been given a 'most likely' diagnosis of CCL but has recently had a bladder infection, a heavy cold with chest infection, she is a constantly stressed worrier anyway and also have a rheumatic hip. Would these factors possibly explain the high lymphocyte count or is CCL the more likely outcome?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, Experienced Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.
Recent infections can cause this rise in WBCs and lymphocyte count commonly.
In that case, the wbc count should show declining trend if repeated every 2 weeks.
CLL diagnosis should be confirmed with bone marrow and cytogenetic studies.
In most cases, CLL is a slow growing malignancy.
Patient often lives normal life for 10-15 years.
Cause of death is often unrelated to CLL.
WBC count below 30 thousand and Hgb around 12 or above have good prognosis.
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
