Customer Question

I was diagnosed with acid reflux about 8 years ago but never took medication or had problems until now. I only have maintenance insurance. I have severe pain in chest and throat going up into ear. I have pain when bending over. I am on 4th day of nexium with no real improvement. What else can I do?

Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and I'm ready to help.
I am sorry you are having such bad acid reflux.
you can use over the counter agents like zantac and mylanta and maalox at night time to help decrease stomach acid.
you should also change your diet to avoid alcohol, fast foods, tomato sauce, fried foods, processed box foods, black pepper, oily foods, acidic juices, sodas, all of which can cause worse stomach acid.
you need to eat smaller meals during the day and avoid large meals at bed time
you need to sleep on a foam wedge with your head inclined up so your stomach acid doesn't come up
you need to diet and loose weight and exercise to help improve your abdominal core strength which will help your GE junction sphincter muscle keep stomach acid down in your stomach.
have you worked on improving your diet and exercising?
