Customer Question

I havebeen winded for a few weeks esp when exercising. My dr doesn't think it is heart related but I just talked to another dr on this site who suggested lung tests to rule out lung diseases. I haven't been officially diagnosed bit I tend to have generalized
anxiety. I tend to work thr it ok. Now with this windedness I am getting worried. My question is can generalized anxiety without panic attacks cause windedness esp with exertion. I also had heart palpitations tonight.

Hello,I am Dr. Aren and I will help with your query.Generalised anxiety and increased stress can cause palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, dizziness and many other symptoms.Getting your Lung function tests will help evaluate you for asthma/allergic bronchospasm, emphysema,COPD,and other respiratory disorders.Ruling out anaemia or low levels of haemoglobin is also desirable. The shortness of breath may increase upon exertion, once other problems have been ruled out,Generalised Anxiety Disorder(GAD) will need to be evaluated and ruled out/diagnosed.Cognitive behaviour therapy(CBT) and counselling along with medication usually treats GAD well.Treatment by an experienced Physician or psychiatrist is desirable.

If I am not hyperventilating but have a low level of GAD, what causes me to be winded from that ? What mechanism is going on in the body to cause the feeling of windedness? Also sometimes my heart just speeds up for no reason. Last night I was just sitting outside enjoying the sun and my heart just starts racing. Could GAD cause this?

Yes,GAD would be the probable cause of both the palpitations and windedness, the exact causative mechanism is not known but the symptomatology of the GAD is well defined .A consultation with a Physician or a mental health specialist would help.
