Hello from JustAnswer.
Your doctor is concerned because diabetes is a common risk factor for the development of abscesses in various locations of the body, including the arm pit.
I usually am not as concerned about diabetes when a patient presents with a single abscess, but when someone has had multiple abscesses, either together or over time, I would routinely check for elevation in blood sugar. In addition, if there were other risk factors or indicators of diabetes, I would probably check a fasting blood sugar with the first abscess.
If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
