persistent hacking cough for 13 years in winter.
difficutly in catching breath
it is not asthma and asthma treatment does not work
worse when it is cold
disappears when the warm weather returns
Welcome and thank you for your question.
Dry hacking cough which occurs in the cold weather usually has two causes - the first is an allergic reaction to cold air and secondly it can be due to a reaction of the respiratory tissues to the dryness caused by the cold air.
In most cases, the cold an be controlled by using anti-allergic medicines like benadryl toghether with a face mask when out in the cold. The face mask (using a surgical mask also helps) prevents the cold air from directly hitting the tissues of the pharynx. The air gets warmed up as it passes through the mask.
Using a humidifier in the bedroom at night also helps to keep the air humid and prevents drying out of the tissues.
You need to also take adequate vitamin C - to keep the respiratory tissues healthy. gargle with warm salt water at night.
I hope this helps.
