I have a small painful bump in my left inner cheek. you cannot see it but only feel it when you put fingers on inside and outside of cheek. I have been to my pc who said it was a blocked parotid gland. I went to an ent who ordered a ct scan. results of scan; no stones, no lumps no masses. what I am dealing with???
Dr. Tharun :

HI

Dr. Tharun :

Do you smoke ?

Dr. Tharun :

Is it growing in size ?

Dr. Tharun :

Does it become more painful when you eat ?

Customer:

No I don't smoke and it isn't painful when I eat. It is not getting larger.

Dr. Tharun :

Most probably it is a blocked salivary gland also called retention cysts.

Dr. Tharun :

As the CT scan is negative for mass, cancer, stones there is nothing to fear about.

Dr. Tharun :

If you were smoking , then a biopsy would have been suggested.

Dr. Tharun :

Since it is constant in size and no ulceration, it is a harmless condition.

Customer:

Should I continue with medicine?? How can it be removed? I have f/u with the ent. Should I see my dentist?

Dr. Tharun :

You can continue the medication.Persistent cases would require small surgical procedure of de-roofing the cyst and removing the walls of the cyst too. Your ENT can do the procedure. It is a simple one and can be done under local analgesia.

Dr. Tharun :

These cysts often come back even after being removed, that is its nature.

Customer:

Do these cysts cause the pain I have been having? although not when I eat?

Dr. Tharun :

Yes, they can cause pain as they distend the gland they block. Infection can also cause pain, hence the antibiotic.Too much meddling with it can also irritate or infect it.

Customer:

OK. I appreciate your quick response and advice.

Dr. Tharun :

you are welcome.
