I am a 22 year old female and have had these symptoms for a few weeks now. I have a swollen lymph node under my jaw on the right side, my throat hurts when I swallow. I am bruising easily, have headaches, my body aches, joints ache and what my husband calls "hot clashes". I went to the dr today and they did a strep and mono test, both came back negative my CBC came back with a slightly high white blood cell count, and a low platelet count. They put me on antibiotics to see if maybe I had an infection that may help. I have had no fever, no cough, no mucus, or congestion. I just feel as if the antibiotics probably won't help, what should I be talking to my dr about?
Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and I'm ready to help.

it could be a viral pharyngitis throat infection which antibiotics would not help wtih. there are many viral infections other than mono which can cause your symptoms.

this can cause your sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, body aches and hot flashes.

I am glad your strep testing and mono testing were negative.

you can try gargling with salt water to kill the virus in your throat.

hopefully you will feel better in a few days.

you can increase your fluid intake and vitamin C in take as well

you can try zinc which can help viral infections be shorter as well.

chicken soup might help as well.

are you getting enough rest and sleep at night?

This has been going on for weeks now...viral infection usually don't last this long though, right?
that is not true

some viral infections can last for months

mono viral infections can last for months

other viral infections can last a while as well.

influenza flu viral infection can also last for several weeks to sometime months.

you have to give your body time to fight off this viral infection.

try the zinc and increase your vitamin C intake and try to get more rest.

Hello. I'm Dr. Phil, licensed and practicing Internal Medicine Physician. Excellent service is my goal.

Thanks for this question

I appreciate the relist

I would like to give an alternative opinion.

This is not a viral infection. They don't last a few weeks. You are 100% correct. And on a side note, there is no evidence that zinc or vitamin C do anything for a "cold" which this certainly is not.

Things we should be looking at now are

1)allergies. This can cause chronic lymph node swelling and sore throat

2)autoimmune diseases like lupus

3)cancer like lymphoma especially with an abnormal CBC

I think you should try aggressive allergy treatment with steroid nasal sprays and anti histamines

I also think you need further blood tests for lupus/autoimmune and also a lymph nodes biopsy if this doesn't clear up.

I would give it a bit more time to clear up with allergy treatment. If no better, then you need an ultrasound guided biopsy.

What kind of time frame are we talking about? Sould I make the appointment next week and ask about the allergy treatment.
I would make an appointment as soon as you can to discuss allergies.

Then give it a couple weeks of treatment before you explore other causes.

What kind of testing should be done first? The blood tests or biopsy. We live in a very secluded little town....Dallas tx is the closest place that we could go to for something like the biopsy...
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Which is several hours away.
I would do the blood tests first.

treat the allergies

reserve the biopsy for a last resort

I'm sorry you are so far from good help :(
