I am 25-years-old, a healthy, homosexual male who's last

This answer was rated:

I am 25-years-old, a healthy, homosexual male who's last sexual encounter was over a year ago. A few days ago, I began to notice blood in my stool. The blood is bright red and comes almost as a coating on the stool that then turns the toilet water reddish. Toilet paper also has a large smear of red on it. There is absolutely no pain/itching. No noticeable tear on the rectum/sphincter. No difficult/over-sized/hard bowel movements recently. What is causing this and should I see a gastroenterologist? When?
Thanks for your advice!

Hi Dr. Robert,

Every time since Saturday (3-4 times).

No nausea/vomiting or fever.

No lump around rectum.

Severe stress would be an overstatement, but the past few weeks have been more stressful than usual.

No medical condition or medication use.

Dear Craig, Thanks for providing quick additional information.
I'm so sorry to hear of your discomfort.
I understand your problem. If the blood was red and bright then the bleeding is likely to be occurring toward the end of the colon or in the rectum. You should not delay and urgently get it clinically evaluated from doctor.
Possible reasons for blood mixed with stool are-
-Inflammatory bowel disease like Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.
-Hemorrhoids- These are dilated blood vessels and depending on their location may feel like a bump around the anus. They are often itchy, painful, and if broken can produce bright red blood with bowel movements or on the tissue after wiping. It can be external or internal in nature.
To make a diagnose you have to undergo these tests-
-Stool test,
-Par rectum examination,
-Complete blood count.
Also If required Colonoscopy may be considered.
Please get it clinically evaluated from your doctor or Gastroenterologist.
If the bleeding is quite severe then you should have an urgent evaluation in ER ASAP.
Please let me know how I can be of further assistance.
