Phil, I was given Dexilant 60mg for GERRD by a specialist

This answer was rated:

Hi Dr Phil, I was given Dexilant 60mg for GERRD by a specialist (allergist/pulmonologist) as part of a regiment to treat my asthma. He gave me a bunch of samples and I didnt get a chance to request a refill and alas his office is closed on Wednesday. I called my primary physician and he didnt want to give me an Rx without talking to the specialist (who never circled back). He said I should take Prilosec instead - is this valid and should I take it in the morning like I did with Dexilant?
Hello. I'm Dr. Phil, licensed and practicing Internal Medicine Physician. Excellent service is my goal.
Yes. Prilosec is just as good.
Dexilant is all hype.
It doesn't work any better

Should I take 2 prilosec (20mg each) to equate to one 60mg Dexilant? Or is 20mg roughly equivalent?

Also why do you say that it is all hype? I'm interested...

A lot of GI doctors use dexilant because it is supposedly more effective but there is no data to back this up.
Hence, all hype
Prilosec 20 mg daily should do the job
Make sure you take it prior to the first meal of the day.

Do you believe in the GERD-asthma theory?
