My husband (39) has been having vicious coughing spells for

This answer was rated:

My husband (39) has been having vicious coughing spells for about a month now. No other symptoms. He literally chokes on his saliva and cannot breathe. It lasts for about 10 seconds and after the spell is over he feels ready to pass out. He tells me that his throat starts to tickle right before the coughing spell. It only happens when he is awake never when he is sleeping. By now he’d learned how to control this cough and only has about 4-5 really bed spells a day. His chest x-ray came back clean. His doc. thinks it could be an allergy or post nasal drip. At this point he is just guessing.
PS. My 13Y son has been having similar cough ( not as strong) for already 2 month. His pediatrician is not sure what to do either. He’d tried antibiotics, Sudafed and allergy meds. Nothing worked. At this point it’s much better than before but he still coughs from time to time.
Please help.
Thank you

Dr. Cameron :

Has your husband been considered for reflux?

Dr. Cameron :

In general, chronic coughs are caused by the following things:

Dr. Cameron :

1. infection

Dr. Cameron :

2. allergies

Dr. Cameron :

3. post nasal drip

Dr. Cameron :

4. reflux disease

Dr. Cameron :

If he has tried the antibiotics, allergy meds and sudafed, then the next thing is reflux medication

Customer:

He does have a reflux. He's been taking Nexium.

Dr. Cameron :

Well, it is possible that despite the nexium, his reflux is triggering the cough

Dr. Cameron :

the best thing to do at this point is see an ENT doctor- because he should be scoped to see if the cords are more irritated

Dr. Cameron :

which suggests reflux

Dr. Cameron :

nasal polyps which are found on ENT exam can also cause a chronic cough

Customer:

He's had a reflux for about 3Y now but he had never had any cough with it. Also, it started after my son had his spells.

Dr. Cameron :

have they seen an allergist?

Customer:

Not yet. Also, he doesn't have any spells when he is sleeping. Shouldn't reflux symptoms worsen when laying down?

Dr. Cameron :

They usually do

Dr. Cameron :

I am trying to troubleshoot with you to the less obvious causes

Dr. Cameron :

At this point antibiotics haven't worked

Dr. Cameron :

Other things are post nasal drip, allergies and reflux

Dr. Cameron :

Sudafed will not work if the issue is a nasal polyp

Dr. Cameron :

if your son has it as well, allergies could be the culprit

Dr. Cameron :

it is time to start thinking more broadly

Customer:

What would be your next step?

Dr. Cameron :

My next step would be to see an allergist

Dr. Cameron :

get your son and your husband tested

Dr. Cameron :

make sure it is not mold, dander, etc

Dr. Cameron :

if that is negative, then the ENT doc

Customer:

Thank you for your help.

you are welcome
