Got a midnight call (just now) from 91 year old mother

This answer was rated:

Got a midnight call (just now) from 91 year old mother saying she feels like she needs to urinate but cannot go at all. She says she felt this way during the day also but only had a few trickles of pee. No fever. Wants to go to er this necessary. She is in assisted living facility.
Welcome and thank you for your question.
Your mother is probably suffering from acute retention of urine. Applying a warm cloth on the lower abdomen and sitting on the toilet can sometimes help with passing urine. Keeping the tap open in the sink can also sometimes help. If she is unable to pass urine after 10 minutes - she will need to go to the ER. She will need to be catheterized.
I hope this helps.
