This answer was rated:

Hi my toddler has a cut on his finger that appears to be infected... there is some pus, drainage and it is red and swollen where the injury (a scrape from a fall) occurred five days ago. He wouldn't let us put anything on it the first couple days, but I treated with neosporin and a band-aid yesterday and it looks slightly worse, not better. Does this warrant a trip to the ER or Urgent Care tonight? Or can I take him to his pediatrician tomorrow?
911DOC :

I'm an ER doc and from what you have told me I think you should get him seen tonight

911DOC :

Finger and hand infections can spread very rapidly

911DOC :

And can be very dangerous

911DOC :

Would be very hard for me in this forum to tell you anything besides that

911DOC :

He needs someone who knows what they are doing to look at his finger

911DOC :

I do not think they will need to do labs

911DOC :

Just examine him

911DOC :

He will almost certainly need antibiotics

Customer:

OK, so an ER or would an urgent care work?

911DOC :

An ER would DEFINITELY work

911DOC :

an urgent care might work

911DOC :

depending on whether he needs to have a small cut placed in the finger to allow pus to drain

Customer:

oh no! i feel terrible for not acting sooner :( just thought it would heal on his own

911DOC :

don't feel bad

911DOC :

but do get him looked at tonight

911DOC :

could make the difference between letting him heal at home while taking antibiotics or getting admitted for IV antibiotics

911DOC :

do you have any final questions for me/

911DOC :

?

Customer:

no, you've been a big help- thank you!

911DOC :
