My son has been vomitting continually for the last several

This answer was rated:

my son has been vomitting continually for the last several days. Has been to ER 2 times and says he has gastritis. He is still vomitting and has chills, fever, cant find comfortable position to rest and has bloody urine. He had an accident 4 yrs ago that left him a paraplegic and while in the hospital had a bout with kidney stones. If the ER checked his urine, would they find that he had more stones if they werent looking for them?

Mysticdoc :

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

Mysticdoc :

Your son's symptoms are concerning.

Mysticdoc :

Kidney stones cannot be ruled out just by checking the urine.

Mysticdoc :

Also sometimes, serious kidney infection may be missed in the urine test.

Mysticdoc :

He needs a CT scan of the abdomen urgently with contrast.

Mysticdoc :

Besides kidney infection, acute pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis ( gallbladder inflammation) are other serious possibilities.

Mysticdoc :

Since his symptoms are not getting better, this makes a strong case for further scans as above.

Mysticdoc :

Please take him to the better hospital if possible or at least discuss with the ER the above options.

Mysticdoc :

are you able to read my replies?

Mysticdoc :

Please let me know --thanks

Customer:

they did an abdominal ultrasound and didnt find anything wrong with gallbladder or pancreas.

Mysticdoc :

ultrasound is not as sensitive as CT scan.

Mysticdoc :

That is why CT scan is important.

Mysticdoc :

He should be also started on IV antibiotics till the cause is found to cover for any serious infection.

Customer:

they took urine to rule out uti which he has often. would the urine test show the stones?

Mysticdoc :

no it will not.

Mysticdoc :

and for chronic infection, urine test may not be specific especially if he received antibiotic recently.

Mysticdoc :

did he have any blood tests?

Mysticdoc :

like blood count, LFTs, electrolytes?

Customer:

they did take blood but not sure for what

Mysticdoc :

ok that is very important also.

Mysticdoc :

high white blood cell count will suggest underlying infection.

Mysticdoc :

elevated LFTs suggest liver or gallbladder problem.

Mysticdoc :

elevated amylase, lipase predict pancreatitis for example.

Mysticdoc :

so these are valuable information to find correct diagnosis.

Customer:

thankyou so much. will take your advice because sometimes I dont think they really care that much. I may have to raise my voice :

Mysticdoc :

yes that is true.

Mysticdoc :

Now you know what to ask for.

Mysticdoc :

Best wishes,
