What are the symptoms of pertussis in older people? And how

This answer was rated:

what are the symptoms of pertussis in older people? And how to differentiate a common cold from something more serious?
Welcome and thank you for your question.
Symptoms of pertussis can be mild in adults and it is usually very difficult to differentiate it from a common cold in the early stages.
Common cold is generally caused by a viral infection. It may be mild in the early 1-2 days, peak in the next 3-4 days and generally shows a healing trend in the next few days. The symptoms clear up in about 7-10 days.
In Pertussis however, the symptoms increase in severity from the 7-14 day and the typical continuous dry cough with 'whoops' occur for about 6 weeks after the initial days.
Continuation of a common cold with increasing severity after 7 days should be checked by a doctor.
I hope this helps.
