Have Medical Questions? Ask a Doctor Online!
Do you mainly have trouble getting to sleep or wake up in night and can't get back to sleep??
What have you tried so far??
Just before we start
I have payed 55$ and got no answer
and payed again just now
is thier a problem with the website?\
I don't know about that I can set you up with customer service...
I am happy to address your questions now if you wish...
Iam 20 years old
I have'nt been able to sleep for 4 months
I only sleep for 5 hours
every 30 hours
OTC aids that may be helpful include Melatonin, Benedryl, Sominex...
it progressed to getting worse
I tried 3mg melatonin before bedtime
but it made it worse
You may benefit to have thyroid function tested. Hyperactive thyroid may be a cause...
Will I suffer from manic depression
and anxiety disorder
I would recommend that you consult your doctor >> prescription meds such as Lunesta or Ambien may be of help...
yesterday I went
to a sleep specialist he said I cannot perscribe ambien
OK the insomnia may be a symptom of Bipolar disorder too... this would need to be well controlled with medication if you have Bipolar....
Yes i spoke to a doctor on this site before
he gave me a bipolar test
I scored 36
dont recall if thats moderate or a bit severe
??? That seems odd that a sleep specialist could not prescribe Ambien...
yes I know
so then I went to a GP
and explained my problem
however she refused to give me ambien
It depends on the specific test and scale used...
What meds are you on currently??
only helps with my anxiety
Do you know WHY she refused??
but not with sleep
She was scared to prescribe it I think
I come from the Kingdom of Bahrain
laws from my ministry about drug control are absurd
So I went to a third GP
and again the same thing
Oh OK I see...
they keep saying they do not have the license to perscribe these drugs
I cannot sleep and it makes me very depressed and feel awkward with myself
tommorow I have an exam
It must be very highly regulated in Bahrain then... I'm not specifically familiar with your countries laws in that regard...
There are many possible options to help you though....
will it started when I was 15
Elavil would be potential option...
Trazodone is potential option...
Is their any chance I can get an international perscription?
Not that I know of... we can't prescribe from this site...
So i can buy my ambien because my psychiatrist in the UK said it was best for me
OK if you see a psychiatrist in the UK then that might be an option for you....
The problem is I cannot take any anti depressants or anti cychotics
Why is that??
In june I have to take a medical test for a pilots exam
I am not permitted to take any benzos or anti depressants
If Bipolar then Lithium may be a treatment option which may help control mania and could help with insomnia if that is realted to the Bipolar..,.
But will I pass my first class medical degree
Well sleep deprivation does not seem to me to be any better option!!
if Lithium is detected in either blood, urine, or saliva?
I have alot of Rivotril
It may be detected in blood yes...
I take only 1.5mg a day
0.5mg in the morning
and 1mg at night
but it is doing nothing to help me sleep
OK >> same dose >> no change??
I have an exam in 8 hours
its a 3 hour paper exam
I am so stressed
that i could not sleep
You might try Benedryl 25 to 50 mg ...
is the perscription?
No, Benedryl is over the counter...
I have some seroquel
It is an anti-histamine that is normally associated with inducing drowsiness...
but it leaves me dumbed down for the rest of the day
The Seroquel should help... that usually would cause drowsiness...
I tried anti histamines
anti histamines with rivotril but to no avail
i weight 168 pounds
at 5 foot 6
is this dose enough for me?
or should I consult my doctor to inscrease it at night?
I guess at your option you might try Seroquel tonight >> this is at least available but I understand the problem with feeling sluggish the next AM too....
You could consult your doctor on that >Yes
ye it is very important to score well on my exam
My depression started at 15
I hope that you do well on your exam!! I hope that you overcome this problem!!
at very moderate
and increased when I was 17
You are very welcome>>
so how do I try to sleep now?
Based on our discussions and what you have avilable I would recommend the Seroquel 25mg tonight >> you might benefit to counteract the drowsiness in the AM with caffeine...
should I go with 50mg or 25mg enough?
I hope that this has been helpful for you. I would strongly recommend further follow up with your psychiatrist...
The problem I cannot convince them to perscribe me any medication
Try 25 mg and give that 30 to 45 minutes adn repeat dose if not asleep...
all they want to do is drug me up with anti depressants and anti psychotics
And at the morning just caffiene?
Yes in the AM extra caffeine should benefit your alertness...
So would you recommend ambien?
2 cups coffe or the equivalent should be of help to you...
Yes I would recommend that... It usually works most excellent for this problem....
do you know a way of convincing these doctors of prescribing the ambien?
I suppose just find the right one > best one for you...
They just charge me so much money and I leave with nothing
I'm sorry that you are frustrated in this way!!
I hate time limits
Right, I understand>> with your test you mean??
especially when my career depends on it
Do you recommend gtraveling outside for aid?
most psychiatrist here is pay your cash get inside for 5 min and get out with no prescription or just some prozac
If necessary then you may need to travel. Your situation is very unusual in this regard....
It sounds that your psychiatrist in the UK has been the most helpful for you...
If i sleep I wake up very fine and full of energy
however if i dont
Iam so depressed
and cannot function
Well hopefully you may get some sleep tonight...
Try the Seroquel and this should help you get to sleep. I think that would be better than risk a sleepless night prior to your exam...
One more thing doctor
is Bipolar a forever thing?
or will my brain have its equilibrium back in a few months?
Yes usually it is unfortunately...
oh my god I am so fortunate -_-
I tried anti depressants
Seroxat, Fluxotine, and Zoloft
Major depression alone is more likely to be a temporary thing but Bipolar is more often a chronic condition that needs treatment
almost commited suicide
I'm sorry >> I hope that you never resort to that >> it is never the right thing to do... always remember that your sense of misery may be intense but it will pass...
you recommend anesthesia treatment?
I'm not familiar with that mode of treatment...
I am very afraid of getting worse
my neighbor has just died a week ago
he had manic depression too
this made thins much worse for me this week
Well you should be able to benefit from treatment for the condition.. it is usually a matter of finding the best medication combination for a given patient...
If iam young at this age is their a chance I might recover quicker?
It is possible...
Doctor are you familiar with alpha and beta brain waves?
I have interest in new strong magnetic therapy that is being used successfully in certain psychiatric conditions... this is cutting edge and I am not too familiar with details of this at this point however...
A little bit familiar... I am not a neurologist or Psychiatrist and do not interpret EEGs for example....
if it doesnt involve elctro shock therapy and wiping half my brain cells I would give it a try
Right, no the magnetic therapy is not destructive in nature .. of that I am sure !! :)
what kind of specialist are you doctor?
Family Practice... kind of the middle of everything...
like a GP?
WE do a three year residency in FP...
so 4 years med school and then 3 years in FP residency
such a long time
I also have a BS degree in Chemistry...
oh thats great
Yes it is a while!!
than you can help me with something
on my upper back shoulder
I got this skin problem
it would be darker and itch and be all dried up
What does it look like??
a bit rid
but no growths or pimples or bleeding or puss
and no I do not sun tan
It sounds that that MIGHT be Tinea Versicolor >> mihgt be fungal skin infection>> if this then it would benefit from topical anti-fungal
will it started happening
when i started shaving using a razor
a sensitive one
the mach 3 gillite
usually do the whole body
IT would be best to have it examined to establish the diagnosis for sure but you might try selsun to see if that helps
only my back shoulder
is their a brand name for that medicine?
or is it a topical cream?
And yes I have very sensitive skin
Topical Lamisil might be helpful for that if it is a tinea type fungal infection of the skin causing that...
Did the razor cause that?
Yes these two are topical (Lamisil is also oral and the oral is by prescription here in the US while the topical is over the counter...)
do you no the compound name
because it will be probably under another company name around this region
I would not specifically blame the shaving but it may have helped it to spread...
Lamisil is Terbinafine....
thanks, ***** ***** you recommend stop using a razor for my shoulders now?
Selsun is selenium sulfide...
I will take note of them
You may benefit to give it a break at least and clear up the skin condition... later I think it is OK for you to shave if you wish...
I also stopped washing that region with soap or scrubbing it
just with warm water in the shower
but it does not itch anymore hence I stopped applying the shower gel on that area
you think their is a correlation
NO I would not think that soap would be likely to aggravate the condition... I think that if you had a sensitivity that it would be all over!!
I also take vitamin B Complex supplements
That is fine>> so do I!!
some doctor long time ago told me it causes some skin reactions
I do alot of gym work
and take some supplements
NO I don't think that the B complex is to blame >> your body requires these nutirnts!!
but I had this condition for over a year now
I usually shower with dail
but the area has no smell so i do not think it could be fungal
Well from your description that sounds likley to be tinea versicolor as a culprit but of course I can't be sure without benfit of examining you...
just looks darker and drier
Yes it can....
and red if i scratch it which I try to avoid
Right>> that sounds like a tinea type infection... they do not smell bad...'
how did I get it?
did not understand
Well the fungal spores are ubiquitous actually adn our body's main defense is to shed skin cells usually faster than the fungus grows... the right conditions may alter this balance and favor the fungal infection such as moist warm and dark conditions...
I stay in the dark alot
just go out at night
and rarely go without clothes on lol
that explains it
go in the sun more should help it you think?
Yes the sunshine would tend to benefit this but this alone not likley cure it once it has a foothold...
I do sweat alot also
so iam moist
That would contribute...
so cream and sun light
and an anti biotic topical?
or no reason too
Yes if you can obtain an antifungal cream then I suspect that this would clear it up for you!!
are they prescription?
Some are but many are generally OTC >> at least here in the US and the UK they are...
oh my god
I need to own my own pharmacy
do you know of any over the counter ones?
which are not to strong
Yes as I recommended the Lamisil should work well..
If i do not see results than what other options should I go for?
I hate going to dermatologists
Well you may ask your pharmacist to help you if you have trouble spotting a helpful product...
our pharmacists here are incompetent to say the truth and have no idea what they are selling
I think it OK for you to try this self treatment first for a few weeks..
OK well I don't know specifically about that!!.....
may it be connected to being this age?
hormonal changes and all that
NO your age is not the problem...
Acne may be connected to age but it does not sound at all acne related...
I have never had acne thankfully
Well that is good>> that is a positive!!
maybe the water I shower with is not so clean?
Well I am not blaming that >> hopefully that is not the issue!!
but thankfully I do not see any signs of spreading
and once I gave a break to the shaving
it kinda stopped being irritable
it did get a bit lighter
but not to that extent which I would like
The shaving would tend to add an irritation to the skin which may be expected to increase the redness and itching > yes...
i use an electric razor for that now
and wipe it with an alcohol wipe before
That is fine...
you have been great help doctor
That would help to reduce the risk of bacterial skin infections especially...
I'm glad to be of help.
