This answer was rated:

I have a silver dollar size lump on the lower left side at the base of my skull. Massive headache for the past 3 days. What is it?

RickMD :

I am online and happy to help you with your question today.

RickMD :

Other than the headache, do you have any other symptoms?

RickMD :

Does this lump move a bit? Does it hurt at all?

Customer:

he is not saying much, but i can tell it really hurts to move his head, it is squishy. he really is straining when he moves his neck.

RickMD :

ok

RickMD :

Why is he not saying much?

Customer:

he never does. just painful, he has worked the past three days, so he is tolerating it, and comes home to rest

RickMD :

Any nausea, vomiting, anything else at all?

Customer:

no, not any, just lots of pain

RickMD :

Ok.

Customer:

could it be a cyst?

RickMD :

Has he ever had a headache like this before.

RickMD :

It could be a lipoma, a lymph node or, as you mentioned, a cyst.

Customer:

no, he has high blood pressure so has headaches but not like this, in the 5 years i have known him, never

RickMD :

In any event I do not believe that this is the cause of his ongoing headache.

Customer:

the lump?

RickMD :

Well, in my opinion a headache that is this severe that goes on for this long -- especially in a patient who does not have history of migraines etc -- should be evaluated.

RickMD :

Yes. The lump.

Customer:

is the lump scary, or maybe if a cyst, can they drain that?

RickMD :

The question at this point is would he rather go to the ER tonight or see his doctor in the morning. From what you have posted, it doesn't seem to be a "true" emergency, but the ER would be able to rule out the majority of serious causes and give him medication to make him feel better tonight.

Customer:

would ice or heat help?

RickMD :

Ice would be best at this point.

RickMD :

Our posts seem to be getting mixed up inside the computers tummy :)

Customer:

okay, thank you for your time and advice tonight.

RickMD :

My pleasure. I hope he feels better soon.

RickMD :

I hope this information was helpful for you. But I do work for tips so I want to make sure you are happy with me before rating me. If you have another question on this or a related issue feel free to fire away. And please let me know if the rating system gives you any troubles.
