This sound like viral upper respiratory tract infection,usually these infections take two weeks to get settle.He has managed his problem rightly so far.I have few suggestions for him,take OTC Tablet Claritin instead of benadryl because if one class of anti allergic is not working other should be tried.Instead of using vicks rub simply he should take steam inhalation with menthol drops.He should also add Mucinex twice daily available OTC.He will feel better with this in a couple of days .If it persist beyond two weeks then get to your GP for an evaluation regarding need of antibiotic .
