Is a 1.6 level of bilirubin that high? Two tests- one in

Resolved Question:

Is a 1.6 level of bilirubin that high? Two tests- one in APril and another in December both had these results for me. Everything else was normal. They were tests done by my psychiatrist since I take lithium. A week after the second test I went to my internist for a physical. The bilirubin came back in the normal range. at .8 i think. He said I don't need any further tests and shouldnt be worried that the bilirubin was elevated in the previous two. He wasn't that concerned with the 1.6 to begin with. What do you think? What are some possible explanations why the biulirubin could have been 1.6 just a week later at a normal level? Looking for clarification and reassurance. I worry too much about my health I think.

Mysticdoc :

Hello

Mysticdoc :

Thanks for your question.

Mysticdoc :

Bilirubin 1.6 is mild elevation.

Mysticdoc :

This can be due to the medication.

Mysticdoc :

Sometimes, fasting blood test also can cause elevated bilirubin.

Mysticdoc :

Besides bilirubin level, other liver enzymes ALT, AST, GGT, and ALP should be measured.

Mysticdoc :

Sometimes gallstones blocking the duct also can cause elevated bilirubin.

Mysticdoc :

If the liver enzymes are normal, then this is not concerning.

Customer:

Everything was normal. Just the bilirubin. All other liver enzymes fine and all blood work for a physical for a 38 yr old male fine

Mysticdoc :

ok then this is not concerning.

Customer:

I start to google things and drive myself crazy. when i google high bilirubin i see terrible things like pancreatic cancer come up

Mysticdoc :

liver enzymes will also be elevated.

Mysticdoc :

isolated bilirubin is not concerning.

Mysticdoc :

this can be due to the hereditary genetic defect causing bilirubin overproduction in the liver

Mysticdoc :

Gilbert's syndrome is one such example.

Customer:

i am under the care of a psychiatrist and worry like crazy about things

Mysticdoc :

please do not worry.

Mysticdoc :

you can see a gastroenterologist also for reassurance

Mysticdoc :

Best wishes,

Customer:

i hope you dont think that is necessary, that makes me nervous. I should just remind myself that it was an isolated bilirubin and that the last test was normal. that test was done about a month ago

Mysticdoc :

yes this is not concerning.

Mysticdoc :

nothing serious.

Customer:

then no specialist. and no cancer

Customer:

still there?

Mysticdoc :

yes correct.

Customer:

Then i guess my problem is mental and not physical and maybe I should start seeing my psychiatrist more often. what do you think?

Mysticdoc :

you should try to relax and avoid thinking too much.

Mysticdoc :

You can see your pychiatrist or therapist more often.

Customer:

Thank you
