Thank you for clarifying,

Whenever someone coughs up blood, I do recommend a chest xray.
Most of the time, it is due to inflammation of the upper airways from chronic bronchitis.

But, given a history of smoking, growths in the lungs/airways need to be ruled out as well.

If you start to cough up blood clots or become increasingly short of breath, go to the ER.
Otherwise, make sure to see your doctor tomorrow for an xray.
Your doctor may also decide to start you on some antibiotics given the fact that you are coughing up more mucus--you may also have acute bronchitis right now as well.

I know that it is scary when you see blood...again, much of the time it is due to inflammation in the airways from chronic bronchitis.
