have you had a colonoscopy since age 50?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.

No and I am desperately afraid...I had one done 30 years ago and it was extremely painful.

Expert:  DrRussMD replied 6 years ago.
that might have been the case 30 years ago but techniques and scopes are much different now and that should not be the case.

In addition with a change in pain and such you must be screened for cancer
We can not call this spastic colon until polyps, cancer, diverticulosis and inflammatory bowel disease or microscopic colitis are ruled out, which should have been done a few years ago.

The diet to relive spastic colon in the meantime looks like this

The diet

The diet, in order of preference in quantity, should look like this
leafy greens
green veggies
other veggies
whole fruit, beans and peas
Whole grains no yeasted breads, dry cereals or anything refined
Seeds and nuts, but cut out seeds if you have any diverticulosis.
A little tofu or tempeh daily
A little high quality soy or coconut milk yogurt

The soluble fiber in this strategy will stabilized colon function in about 6 to 8 weeks, then about 2 or three helpings of animal foods a week, preferably fish, can be added back.
See the book Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, for instructions on this type of diet.

Good luck

Please suggest an alternative solution. There are only a few foods I like. Is there another soothing type of diet?

Expert:  DrRussMD replied 6 years ago.
Make sure that daily you have
stewed fruit
peeled apples
steamed and peeled veggies at every meal
oat bran
cooked and ground flax

Somewhat of a shortcut, not as good
good luck again

Customer: replied 6 years ago.

Thank you that is more tolerable.

One last question. Well, two questions. 1. Is there an OTC product I can get at a drug store that has a more immediate effect (albiet temporary)?

Lastly, What type of doctor should I make an appointment with for a colonoscopy? Will I need to be seen by a GP first?

Thank you
