Can a CBC w/auto differential or BMP be used to detect

Customer Question

can a CBC w/auto differential or BMP be used to detect and/or quantify present substances(medications)? If so, is this a routine part of the test(s) or does it require specific testing? Same Question re: stool sample? Thank you

You would have to order specific testing. A routine CBC and BMP will not detect medication use.

Depending on the lab, different collection tubes are used for drug testing and therapeutic drug monitoring versus the collection tubes used for a routine CBC and BMP.

As for a stool sample, drug screens are not routinely run on them. Stool sample routine testing includes bacterial cultures, gram stains, testing for parasites and ova, bacterial toxin (c. diff toxin), white blood cells and red blood cells. Any other stool testing would have to be specifically ordered.
