My thumb 'pops' to bend and unbend . The popping is at the joint near the nail, but seems to be connected to the joint at the base of the thumb as with a tendon or ligament. It is painful, particularly when popping to a open or straight position. This happened suddenly a few weeks ago and has not improved.

Hello, welcome to Justanswer, I will try to assist you with your medical question, and any medical information you seek

Customer:

OK

Dr B :

I work in orthopaedic surgery, and what you have is likely trigger thumb

Customer:

So what are the symptoms and what can be done about it?

Dr B :

It is caused by inflammation and subsequent fibrosis of the tendon sheathe

Dr B :

have you tried splinting?

Customer:

No, have only used ibuprofen. This happened suddenly one day when I woke up

Dr B :

First of all, you need to see a hand surgeon, to provide you with the correct treatment, and perhaps a splint. In cases that persist, a cortisone injection may be needed, and lastly , if nothing else works then surgery is a last resort

Customer:

With anti-inflammatory medication, and a splint would this likely heal on its own? I have had carpal tunnel surgery on my hand 3 years ago.

Dr B :

I cannot say, every case if different, many improve with these conservative measures, while some require surgery

Customer:

Thank you

Dr B :

Steroid injections often provide a lot of relief

Dr B :

You're welcome
