Looking at the list of medications that your mother in law is on.. simvastatin is for high cholesterol, fosamax and calcium for bones, lidoderm is for pain relief. In regards ***** ***** other medications: sertraline (zoloft) is shown to be effective in treating depression in those with Alzheimer's disease but it does not have any improvement in cognitive function. The 5mg of ambien is used to help her sleep and is low dose so that appears appropriate if she is having difficulty sleeping. the abilify is used for patients who have hallucination, delusions, are aggressive or hostile (so depending on her behavior this may or may not be appropriate). Lorezepam and ativan are for anxiety and the fact that she is getting both might not be necessary. I agree with you in that there is no medication that is directed at Alzheimer's on her list of meds (other than medications that can help with some symptoms of it). I would talk to her doctors about why that is and why a medications such as aricept has not been added on and why they feel she needs so many sedative types of medications. I hope this helps.
