I have been treated for glaucoma for many years with Xalatan…

Customer Question
I have been treated for...
I have been treated for glaucoma for many years with Xalatan eye drops. Recently my pressure went up to 18, gradually, from 12 to 14. The ophthalmologist who had been treating me retired and referred me to a young member of the group who has been practicing for 3 years. The pressure was 18 and he suggested a laser procedure taking place in an outpatient surgical center with which I had a bad experience. I had heard from a physician and others of poor treatment there, so I said I wouldn't go there,
but that's where the equipment is located.
The young ophthalmologist referred to my ' irrational fear' and ordered a next visit four months hence. I know that there are other eye drops which can be used with Zalatan and also that there are two types of laser treatment, so I made another appointment a week later. The physician declind to be concerned, recommended just waiting it out, tested for pressure and found it at 17. Medicare patients have trouble finding replacement doctors here

Hello. Tough situation, not uncommon.
Laser therapy can be very effective but of course you need to develop trust with the physician and being called irrational dose not help that. Keep trying for a second opinion.

As far as the medications go, there are five classes of glaucoma med. You are on one that is very advantageous due to once daily dosing and the fact that it increases fluid outflow. You might gently ask your doc if he/she can place you on and additional med that decreases fluid production, thus hitting the problem from both ends, so to speak.

Of open angle glaucoma, laser trabeculoplasty is of choice, using either an argon laser or low level energy laser. Improvement rate is about 75%.

The newer procedure is selective laser trabeculoplasty, using the less intense energy and accomplishes the same purposes as the higher energy laser. This is the less invasive procedure.

Micro surgery is another option.

Good Luck
