I recently went to a weight loss clinic. They completed blood tests and all of my hematology reports were normal except the following:
RDW 16.7 normal range 10.1-16.5
Neutrophils 20.3 normal range 40-74
Lymphocytes 66.6 normal range 19-48
Monocytes 18.4 normal range 1.4-9.0
Basophils 2.2 normal range 0.0 - 1.5

there were other tests but they all fall within normal range. I have no medical problems and all other tests; comp. metabolic panel, throid profile, coronary risk profile, triglyceride, hdl and ldl cholestrol are all within normal range. I have been very exhausted lately and thought it was because I had gained so much weight: I am
just a litte over 5 ft 7 inches tall and weigh 198 pounds.5 ft. 7/2 7/2
please let me know your response

Over all the possibilities here are iron deficiency anemia or other anemia, assuming the RDW is actually high although this is within the realm of error. The low neutrophils and highly lymphocytes imply a viral infection possibly and you might want to have an epstein barr virus panel to rule out mono. With the basophils, you also have to consider an allergic response, chronic sinusitis.

With a normal hemoglobin, actual anemia is unlikely but you still could have early iron deficiency; iron studies would be definitive, and this should be considered if the Hg was on the low end.

You should still start weight loss immediately. These labs should first be repeated after a certain period. If they persist, then having a hematologist look at them would be ideal.

Good Luck

Following are the additional hematology reports:
WBC 3.9 of 3.8 - 10.8 range
RBC 4.27 of 3.9 - 5.4
Hemoglobin 13.4 11.9 - 15.8
Hematocrit 41.9 37-47 range
MCV 98.3 80-100 range
MCH 31.5 27-33 range
MCHC 32.0 30-37
in response to your answer - everything seems to be mid normal range with the exception of WBC -- do you still see a possible iron deficiency?
Doctor: DrRussMD, Board Certified Physician replied 8 years ago
No, so I would say the RDW is within the range of lab error.
I would proceed as I have described above. Repeat the tests in several weeks, as a first step.
