Hi,

I am a healthy 54 year old woman, 5'2" 135 lbs. I am not on any medications, just vitamins. I try to exercise 3 times a week.

Question: I drink 3 glasses of red wine each night. Is this dangerous? Could it be a cause of not being able to get to my ideal weight?

The current recommendation is that women should not drink more than one glass of wine per day. There is evidence that even the one glass carries some risk, but it also appears to carry some benefit. Of course, the more someone drinks, the greater is the risk. From a weight perspective, a glass of wine contains ~100 calories, which may not seem like much, but over the course of a year, one glass of wine per day is 36,500 calories, which equates to over ten pounds. Consequently, eliminating or reducing alcohol from the diet does help with trying to achieve weight loss. It is only one of many factors, but it should help.

The primary risk of drinking 1-3 drinks per day is an increased risk of several cancers, including cancers of the breast, liver, colon, mouth, throat, and esophagus. The effect on the mouth, throat, and esophagus is particularly increased in smokers.
