Top of my left ear is swollen and red. Also hot and painful

Resolved Question:

My left ear is swollen, red, hot and painful at the top of the ear on the outside. No other symptoms of infection or injury. What causes this and what should I do?

Are these symptoms localized to one particular area on your left ear?

Do you see any opening, discharge or pus?

Do you have fever?

When did you develop these symptoms?

Have you been evaluated for it?

Customer: replied 7 years ago.

Yes, symptoms are localized to the top of the ear. No opening, discharge or pus. No fever, although the area is warm to the touch. Developed symptoms one day ago. Never happened before. No evaluation -- thought I would try you first!

Your description is suggestive of localized skin infection. You may not get systemic sign of infection unless the disease is wide spread. The best option to visit your doctor and get prescription meds. If you can not make it then, you can use OTC Neosporin and take pain meds for symptomatic relief. If the swelling increases or you develop fever, you will have to see your doctor.
