Resolved Question:

When coughing, I exerience a sharp pain in my right armpit. I don't feel any lumps and there is no other pain except during a hard cough. This started about 4 days ago. I'm a female, age 59. What could be causing this?

Thank you.

Pain in the chest wall during coughing or deep breathing is usually due to Costochondritis. This occurs due to inflammation of the cartilage along with the ribs and can be caused by viral infection or injury. You can take Tylenol as needed for the pain, and it can take several days for the symptoms to resolve. If the symptoms are severe or you have any shortness of breath, then you should see your doctor for an exam.
