first, check out the asacol web site; there are a couple of coupon thingies there: http://www.asacol.com/ Also, the medication comes in a variety of other brand names: AprisoTM; Asacol®; Canasa®; LialdaTM; Pentasa®; Rowasa®; you might check out each of these names to see if they each have their own web sites with other discounts available.
There is also a clearing house of assistance programs that are sponsored by the pharmaceutical manufacturers: http://www.rxassist.org/ You can look up each of these brand names of medications on this site, to see if any of their respective manufacturers offer assistance programs.
Mesalamine (the generic name for Asacol) does come in a rectal enema preparation. with ulcertive colitis, that form may be effective for her. She should ask her doctor about that possiblity, and she can ask at the pharmacy about the price of this in generic form.
Another thing you want to do, especially if you don't qualify for any of the assistance programs, is to call around to all the pharmacies in your area. You might be surprised at how much they differ in what they charge for the very same medications. The state of Michigan offers a web site where you can look up a specific medication and it tells you what each pharamacy in a given area is charging. Perhaps your state offers something similar.
As for the assitance programs: The companies all have their own forms that you need to fill out, and I believe you have to document your income level as well. IF you qualify for assistance, they generally send you a three months supply at a time, and you have to resubmit forms periodically. It can be a hassle, but if you qualify, the cost savings can be a great help.
