2008 tribute, car won't...

2008 tribute, car won't start. I can hear the starter clicking when I turn the key but the engine won't turn over

Mechanic's Assistant: Can you turn the steering wheel at all? And what about the key? Is it worn or damaged?

Let me check

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Tribute yourself? What have you tried so far?

I can turn the wheel, key is not damaged, tried tapping on starter while someone turns the key. checked battery connections, fine. checked fuses, fine.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Headlights are nice and bright , but havent checked voltage on battery. this is an intermittent issue

Pull the starter relay located underhood fuse/relay box and the prongs should be numbered 1,2,3,5, put a jumper wire between 3 and 5

starter stared smoking so I pulled it out

ok, replace the starter its bad. you applied 12 volts directly to the starter's solenoid, it should have cranked the engine.

sounded like it tried to crank but nothing, saw smoke and pulled it out

replace it.
