Customer Question

CEL came on a week ago. 2001 Tribute V6. Car idles very rough, but once under way runs fine.
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: Stays on
JA: What is the make/model of your car?
Customer: 2001 Tribute V6
JA: Are you fixing your Tribute yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes. haven't tried anything yet. Was looking for how to read the codes. I recall a light across a connector can display a code to indicate problem area
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No

Hi Im David, thanks for visiting the site. is the check engine light on? and where the heck did you read about a light across a connector? you need to plug a scan tool into the DLC connector under the dash to read codes. the first thing I want you to do is to pull the idle air control valve off and clean it out with brake parts cleaner extremely well. the put it back on, start the vehicle and see if it clears up the rough idle.

Welcome, I'm Chris (aka Moose), my normal schedule online is around lunch and after dinner till early morning.

Step one is to hook up a scan tool and get the codes. Next is to make sure your up to date on all maintenance. Can you report back on those results?
