1999 Miata, 45k mileage. Strong fuel smell in passenger and trunk area with car running or parked. No sign of leakage and car runs perfect. Fuel consumption normal.

There is a fuel pump door gasket that you will need to be replaced.

The seal is dry rotted and this is why you are smelling the fuel fume.

The access is under the carpet, on the shelf behind the drivers seat. Take the drivers seat out, remove the carpet on top, take off the sheet metal cover, disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connections, then unscrew the access cover, the pump and fuel pressure regulator is attached to the cover, and will lift out with it.
