Mazda MPV LX: Our 2001 Mazda MPV had the key stuck in the ignition

Resolved Question:

Our 2001 Mazda MPV had the key stuck in the ignition with the power staying on. When we disconnected the battery, the key came out. This seems to be an ongoing problem - has there been a recall for this problem? The Van has a little over 60,000 miles.

You most likely have a bad interlock switch on the shifter. It's the part that doesn't let you pull the key out if the transmissions in gear. If you press the brake pedal when the transmissions in park you should hear a click. This is the interlock solenoid. Your solenoid isn't working. This is the most common issue or a bent shift rod to the shifter not allowing the shifter to be in the all the way up position. These are the next steps. Hoped this helped. Positive feedback and bonuses greatly appreciated.

How much should the fix be or what would happen if we just kept the hazard fuse removed? Because removing the hazard fuse let's us take the key out and turn off the power.

If the hazard fuse is out the turn signals or hazards will not work. It would cow about 250 parts and labor to fix. These are the next steps. Hoped this helped. Positive feedback and bonuses greatly appreciated.
