Hi, Thank you for the new question, and thank you for the high rating and bonus on the last one. For this problem, let x represent the width of the parking lot. Since the length is 6 yards longer than the width, the length is x + 6. The area is the product of the length and the width, x(x + 6), and is equal 112 square yards, which gives: x(x + 6) = 112 Expanding the left side gives: x^2 + 6x = 112 which can be rearranged as: x^2 + 6x - 112 = 0 You can factor this as: (x - 8)(x + 14) = 0 which gives the solutions x = 8 and x = -14. Or, you can use the Quadratic Formula to get the same values for x. The negative solution makes no sense in the context of this problem (although it will turn out to be the negative of the length). The width of the parking lot is then x = 8 yards. Thanks, Ryan
