I think there is a typo. Is it an equality or a subtraction sign right before 37?

a subtraction sign

We cannot solve for x. This is not an equality or an inequality. Are you sure all of it is written correctly.

could you help me solve this one 40-4x=2|3x-10|
Expert:  abozer replied 7 years ago.

First remove the absolute sign and solve for x,

40 - 4x = 2(3x - 10)
40 - 4x = 6x - 20
-4x - 6x = -20 - 40
-10x = -60
x = 6

Now, remove the absolute sign but put a negative sign in front,

40 - 4x = -2(3x - 10)
40 - 4x = -6x + 20
-4x + 6x = 20 - 40
2x = -20
x = -10

So the solutions are 6 and -10.
