This is a geometric series, with the first item costing X, the second one costing X(1.01), the third costing X(1.01)(1.01)...and so on.

The total sum for N items can be calculated with this formula:

Total cost = X ( 1 - (1.01)^N ) / ( 1 - 1.01 )
