I have an old iMac 21.5" desktop, serial # W80379FAMDAS, purchased in Nov. 2010. I tried to update the OS in March 2018 and couldn't complete the process. I tried again today and got the message that an error occurred. What can I do now?

Oh boy, don't know. Mountain Lion?

I just tried to update in March 2018 and then again today by going to the message box in the upper right corner of my desktop saying that an OS was available.
