I understand, As you know you are dealing with a feature called "Activation Lock". This is a high security feature and there is no way as an end user to bypass it.

Normally, when selling the device, the original owner should have disabled this before giving it to you. I understand this is a bit of an unusual situation but we are at Apple's mercy here.

Apple has been known to take a tough stance on this issue due to theft concerns. You may try calling them at (800)(###) ###-####/strong> in Canada. You will need to explain the entire situation and they will likely need information from the original owners husband.
