I received a message REP 2712-1702-6478 telling me that I need to get on line or my program will be shut down.

Technician's Assistant: When was the last time you updated the Operating System (OS) on your Apple device?

Yesteday

This call was not from apple. It is a very common tech support scam which usually originate in India. The trick is for them to scare you into giving them access to your computer and then they will lie about issues that you do not have and try to make you pay hundreds of dollars to fix the fake issues.
