Lots of popups. The last few days I have been having trouble

Customer Question

Lots of popups. The last few days I have been having trouble with my Macbook pro. I keep getting a popup that appears on my screen playing an ad. I also had a call from my bank's fraud division that a company called media link out of Canada had tried to charge my card with a small fee. I had joined SCRIBD online for no fee for 30 days and this other page pops up asking for my info.
JA: Just to clarify, how old is your MacBook Pro and what operating system are you running?
Customer: It is older, about 7-8 years. Is the operating system OSX El Capitan?
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: No.
JA: Anything else you want the computer expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: I guess not. I will want to know cost before I do anything.
