When I try to start my mac book pro, all it does is beep at me every few seconds. I don't get the normal chime when powering up. What has caused this? The last time I used it I shut it down normally.

please follow these steps to try and reset the NVRAM -

To reset your NVRAM, you use exactly the same procedure you once used to reset PRAM: Shut down your Mac, press the power button, and as soon as you hear the startup chime, hold down Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding down those keys until you hear a second startup chime.
