Trying to connect a G4(9.4) to a G5 (10,4) with ethernet

trying to connect a G4(9.4) to a G5 (10,4) with ethernet cable
JA: What OS X (Operating System, e.g. Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, etc.) or iOS are you running?
Customer: the G4 is system 9.4 and the G5 is system 10.4. I use the 9.4 on the G4 to rum a mac native sign software program I want to enterface with G5 running a sign program design for a pc w/ a mac interface
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: No the G5 was a cast off from a friend that has been on the shelf for a couple of years
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: none yet
JA: Anything else you want the Mac expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: how do I rename the hard drive on the G5

Move files back and forth, do editing in different programs and possibly use a common printer

No. You need to have an IP address assigned to your computer.
