Initial problem is my laptop is not starting. I am getting a blank screen with a folder with a question mark.

This error indicates that your Macbook has difficulty booting up through the internet.

Try removing all connected peripherals except your mouse, reboot the Macbook and try to start it up again.

If it still won't boot up you will need to attempt to boot from a Recovery drive.
