Restart your Mac

As soon as you hear the Startup chime, press and hold the SHIFT key

Continue to hold the Shift key until you see the Apple logo and progress indicator.

Then, let go of the Shift key and let it boot to the Desktop (it may take longer than usual so please be patient).

See if it makes it to the desktop successfully. If it does, restart normally and see if the issue is resolved.

Once you are finished, or if you have any questions along the way, please let me know.

Thank you for your advice. I did not use it, as the Mac started itself and has been fine ever since.
