the ipad may just need a reboot.
Press and hold the HOME button (the one below the screen on the front) and the LOCK button (the one at the top right corner) together, until the screen goes completely black, then shows a white apple logo, then you can let go.
Give it a few minutes to start back up, and let me know if that helps.

you'll next need to plug the ipad into a computer with itunes running, via usb cable,
then press and hold those buttons again until the itunes logo comes up on screen, and then restore the ipad via itunes.
